A surface can look clean but still require effective sanitation to control microbial biofilms. A biofilm is a community of microorganisms that attaches to a surface and becomes embedded in a self-produced protective matrix. In food processing, biomanufacturing, and pharmaceutical environments, biofilms can develop on pipes, tanks, conveyors, drains, equipment surfaces, and
other hard-to-clean areas.
Why are biofilms a concern? They can harbor microorganisms that promote contamination that is very hard to remove. They can detach and wreak havoc on your product or process, where routine cleaning may not be effective at removing them.
